Do's and Don'ts for Louvre Installation

  • Written by News Company

While louvres come in a variety of shapes and styles, they are all installed in a more or less similar fashion with blades running horizontally, unless the requirement states otherwise. This brings us to creating a 'Do's and Don'ts installation guide' that applies to all types of louvres, whether operable, stationary or electric powered.

Inspect for damage

Installing a damaged louvre is a potential safety hazard for the people using it. Also, it won't perform as intended and might defeat the purpose of the installation altogether. The damage doesn't necessarily mean broken blades. It could be a manufacturing defect or loose screws. It is also recommended to run a test on operable louvres to make sure the blades move without obstruction and that all of them are moving. However, choosing fixed aluminium louvres for your property would eliminate the need for testing to a great extent, as there are no moving parts in the setup.

Do not try to fit the square peg in a round hole

While it may be tempting to stretch or compress the louvre into the given opening, doing so will only damage the blades and make the installation look crooked. Moreover, removing the louvre for repairs and putting it back is cumbersome. If you want to get the most out of the louvre installation, it is imperative that the louvre fits where it belongs.

Handle it correctly

When you lift a louvre or carry it around, make sure you don't hold it by the actuator or blades. While the overall built of external aluminium louvres is robust, the blades and actuator are sensitive to mechanical strain. Therefore, manufacturers advise you to lift your louvre by the frame to avoid bending of blades or the actuator. If possible, use multiple lift points so that the strain spreads thin across the frame.

Secure the actuator

The actuator must not be exposed to dirt or direct moisture. This should be taken care of during installation because post-installation changes can be difficult to accommodate. Also, when powering the actuator, keep your fingers off the blades to avoid a pinch.

Electrical arrangement

When installing an electric powered louvre, make sure to check the system beforehand or involve a licensed electrician to avoid any electrical disaster. Even if you have had installed an electric louvre before, be mindful of the fact that every electrical system is different and may have its own individual specifications. Also, don't forget to tally voltage and current rating of the actuator with the electrical socket you are using.

Takeaway

A properly installed louvre stays in good shape for years to come and with regular maintenance, it can last a lifetime. When it comes to removing dirt and gunk from louvres, it is advisable to use mild solvents and a soft brush or a piece of cloth.

Louvres can function perfectly without lubricants. However, if you must lubricate the blade hinges, use dry lubricant to prevent dust build-up on internal components.
